Death is something we all experience, yet for many of us it remains one of the hardest subjects to discuss.

A fascinating article published in The Guardian on 6 October 2026, 'We live in grief-phobic societies': experts on how to get more comfortable with death, explores why we find conversations about death so difficult, and how becoming more comfortable with our own mortality can actually help us live more fulfilling lives.

Written by Madeleine Aggeler, the article brings together insights from grief researchers, healthcare professionals and others who work closely with death and dying. It considers how our reluctance to confront death can leave us unprepared, both emotionally and practically, when we experience loss.

But it also offers a more positive perspective. Talking openly about death, thinking about our wishes and making practical plans can help us feel more in control, strengthen our relationships and encourage us to appreciate the lives we are living.

At Dying Matters Leicestershire and Rutland, this is very much at the heart of what we believe. Conversations about death and dying need not be frightening or morbid. They can be reassuring, empowering and, above all, an important part of living well.

We think this thoughtful and accessible article is well worth reading.
